About Neighborhood Artists Inc.
A Place To Lay Their Heads

Over two decades ago, Neighborhood Artists, Inc. (NA) was born. Levern Williams, overwhelmed by the deprivation, the extreme suffering and homelessness situation in his neighborhood, decided to do something about it. His compassion, commitment and perseverance has given birth to a permanent housing and support services complex that provides a myriad of social services to the homeless, low income families, senior citizens and artist population.

NA, primarily through its volunteer staff and various outreach agencies, have been providing vital health, social, employment related and other services to low income and homeless individuals and families in Upper Manhattan and Harlem. NA was conceived with the vision to positively impact the physical, psychological and social readjustment of individuals whose milieu has been drastically changed through sudden homelessness due to major life altering experiences.

In addition, as a result of Mr. Williams' vision to provide not only services to this escalating population, but permanent housing as well, "A Place To Lay Their Heads Development Inc." was born. Consistent with the vision, in August 1988, NA was granted site control from The New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development, of two city-owned abandoned buildings adjacently located at 601 west 132nd Street, Harlem, New York. NA applied for and has been awarded a total of $3 million in funding from the New York State Department of Social Services under the Homeless Housing Assistance Program for redevelopment of the buildings. The buildings have a total of 20 units which includes studios, one and two bedroom apartments.

NA has accomplished independent, but could not have done it without the support of others. NA will continue to implement permanent solutions to combat homelessness and other health, social and economic ills in New York City. NA's dream is to globally duplicate it permanent housing and homelessness prevention concept which will develop and instill a sense of self worth , thereby promoting , worldwide, our targeted group back into mainstream society. Sucess is a result of having God on your side and never giving up. Faith+Focus+Follow+Thorugh=Sucess. NA has just begun.
