and Activities
Housing Development
NA Inc. developed the innovative concept of permanent housing and
supportive services in 1988. In 1989, the agency branched to form A Place
To Lay Their Heads Development, a HDFC Corporation. Currently the agency
is planning a 19 unit project in West Harlem in conjunction with Harlem
Congregations for Community Improvement (HCCI), as well as a 16 unit
project in the Bronx soon to be developed by A Place To Lay Development.
Housing Referrals
NA Inc. serves the homeless and low income of upper Manhattan by
referring them to housing sources, which include low rent apartments,
temporary housing, SROs and shelters run by other not-for-profit agencies.
Administrative Assistant Training Program
Over the past years NA Inc. has managed a training program recognized
by HRA and the Department of Labor.
Unemployed individual, including welfare recipients, are trained in office
and computer procedures and then placed into jobs.
Job Placement
NA Inc. routinely assists community residents in preparing their
resumes and providing job references. NA Inc. has linkages with STRIVE,
the new York State Department of Parks, the AFL-CIO, and other entities
which welcome NA Inc.'s referrals.
Food Bank/Soup Kitchen
NA Inc. participates in the Food for Survival program, which supplies
the agency with food for donation to the hungry. In addition to sponsoring
free food giveaways, the agency keeps a pantry of food in its Amsterdam
Avenue office to feed local community residents on a walk in basis. Senior
citizens in the neighborhood are frequent participants in NA Inc.'s food
program. For the Soup Kitchen, help is solicited from elderly/retired
community residents to prepare meals in their homes which are then
dispensed by volunteers to the needy. This program answers the twofold
need giving seniors an activity to make them feel needed, as well as
feeding the hungry in the neighborhood.
Services to Senior Citizens
NA Inc. provides services to senior citizens in the Manhattan Valley
and West Harlem communities such as advocacy, artistic workshops,
assisting tenant leadership groups to organize, as well as counseling,
housing referrals and food provision.
Counseling
NA Inc. offers counseling to individuals seeking assistance in
obtaining entitlements such as SSI and Welfare. Also, the agency is
consolidating its efforts with the Sydingham Center on 125th Street and
St. Luke's Hospital at 114th Street and Amsterdam to insure its clients a
broad array of supportive services which include health, mental health
drug, housing and employment. NA Inc. will soon be offering artistic
workshops to the mentally ill in conjunction with St. Lukes Hospital.
Fundraising Events
During its decade of existence, NA Inc. has sponsored numerous
fundraising events, such as its Annual Art Auction, Jazz Nite, and the
Charles Inniss Annual Breakfast which honors outstanding individuals in
the field of human service.
These events provide much needed operational funding which enables the
agency to serve the needy.
